On August 28, this year the so-called Harvest Festival or Lughnasad takes place.
This is an important moment in the seasonal cycle. A festival,
which the ancestors called Lugnasad.

The ancient Celtic festival Lugnasad,
which lies exactly between the summer solstice
and the autumn equinox,
has various names: Lughnasadh, Lammas,
Harvest Festival, Grain Festival, Offering Festival, Thanksgiving Festival…

With Lugnasad, the harvest season begins in the seasonal cycle.
This continues through the autumn equinox
and ends with Samhain.

No matter whether the celebrations are shaped by nature-connected spirituality
or Christian influences, they all have one thing in common. They want to thank the active forces of nature,
Mother Earth, by traditionally
offering them the first harvested fruits
and thus giving something back in gratitude.

Some ears of ripe grain are left standing in the field
for the Great Goddess, for Mother Earth.
A few crumbs of the old bread are baked into the new bread.
A few of the old grains are mixed with the new seed.
A few fibers of the old are woven into a new piece of fabric.
These ritual actions indicate that there is no beginning
and no end. Everything new arises from the old and is thus part of an ever-present cycle.

Lugnasad offers the opportunity to express gratitude,
not only for the abundance of food on the plates,
but also for a fulfilled life.

Walk through the fields of nature
and through the fields of your life.
What stands large and ripe in the fields?
What wants to be harvested… in your life?

In conclusion, a fitting quote from Cicero:
‘Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues,
but also the mother of all others.’
