about the backgrounds, traditions, and rituals of this annual cycle festival. The program is hosted by Karin Neumeyer from LIVING EARTH.

On August 2, the so-called Schnitterfest or Lughnasad takes place.
This is an important time in the annual cycle. A festival,
which the ancestors called Lugnasad.

Lugnasad means as much as “wedding of light.”
‘Lugh’ also means oath or vow in Celtic.
In earlier times, there was the custom of entering into an official bond (marriage) that lasted a cycle (that is, a year)
until the next Lugnasad. Then this connection was renewed or ended. This tradition of trial marriages,

which was still common until the 16th century,
can still be found today in engagement before marriage.

The ancient Celtic festival Lugnasad,
which lies exactly between the summer solstice
and the autumn equinox,
has various names: Lughnasadh, Lammas,
Schnitterfest, Kornfest, Opferfest, Erntedankfest…

With Lugnasad, the harvest season begins in the annual cycle.
This continues through the autumn equinox
and ends with Samhain.

Regardless of whether the celebrations are influenced by nature-connected spirituality
or Christian traditions, they all have one thing in common. They want to thank the active forces of nature,
Mother Earth, by traditionally offering
the first harvested fruits
and thus give something back in gratitude.

Some ears of ripe grain are left standing in the field
for the Great Goddess, for Mother Earth.
A few crumbs of the old bread are baked into the new bread.
A few of the old grains are mixed with the new seed. In a new piece of weaving,
a few fibers of the old are woven in.
These ritual actions show that there is no beginning
and no end. Everything new arises on the ground of the old and is thus part of an everlasting cycle.

Lugnasad offers the opportunity to witness gratitude,
not only for the abundance of food on the plates,
but also for a fulfilled life.

Walk through the fields of nature
and through the fields of your life.
What stands tall and ripe in the fields?
What wants to be harvested… in your life?

In conclusion, a fitting quote from Cicero:
“Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues,
but also the mother of all others.”
