The interaction with clients and the working conditions for caregivers have been major topics for many years. Ingrid Nyffeler has developed a special model with her network of independent female caregivers. Clients are cared for with special attention, relatives are involved, and nursing professionals have the energy and time to dedicate themselves to the clients. In a conversation with Claudia Männer, she shares from her practice and the offer to also support other caregivers in establishing their independence and networks.
Today is Nikolaus – what does that have to do with human change in caregiving?
I do not know if you find yourself through upbringing – if you are not good, then the Krampus will take you and put you in a sack – also in an old conviction pattern like:
– I am to blame
– I am not good enough
– I cannot do anything right anyway …
and many small children wanted to cling somewhere to mom or dad in their panic … but then the second trauma – they – that is, mom and dad – just laughed and said: it’s not that bad, it’s just fun. NO – for a small child, that is another massive separation trauma.
Caregiving is for me an existence in difficult moments – perhaps in such a moment – so that the goosebumps – when one only thinks of it – may heal.
Such human accompaniment manifests itself in being there individually in time – perceiving the needs of a client – and cannot be achieved through the administration of a tablet. Maybe in the short term, but when the effect is over, the pain is also there. The experience and the person who is accompanied are what is needed. This difference in caregiving at home in difficult life situations already provides much more calm – both for the caregiver and for the client. Bringing the hierarchy into play as little as possible, but rather fostering an exchange at eye level in difficult situations.
This requires trust in each other.
Then the Krampus can pack up and so can Nikolaus.
