War Stories – what have our grandparents and parents experienced
Through my work as a funeral speaker, I have encountered many stories from the war generation. The cohorts of the 1920s and 1930s are slowly dying out, and the eyewitnesses are becoming fewer. It is terrible that in the 21st century we still have to mourn wars all over the world.
But what did the war mean for our ancestors? How did our ancestors become who they are? What shaped them? The madness of war, what did it do to the soldiers? What did it do to the women and children? How many traumas did they experience? How much hunger and deprivation did they have to endure?
Who helped them? How could they continue to live? What wreckage did they find? They cleaned up and rebuilt everything. But the tears over all the misery of the war years were never shed. And they have probably been passed down to us as well.
Let us be aware again that wars can never be a solution –
And that peace in the world begins with each one of us….
